Rainmeter

So now your Windows XP desktop looks like a museum display, your Windows Vista is the joke of the century, and Windows 7 has lost it's glossy charm what can you do to recapture that "fun oohh aahh" emotion each time you fire up your best friend? Whether at the office or at home is there a solution that might perk up those old dogs or breathe new life into the boring ones? While appearance has it's place, usability and reliability are other key factors that must be taken into consideration. After all, what good is a fantastic looking machine that keeps crashing every few hours - annoying is what it is.

Enter Rainmeter.
 

So what on earth is Rainmeter ? Well first off, this is NOT about the weather although that is an an element that it offers. Rainmeter is a free desktop customization platform (as of March 2010). With Rainmeter, you can enhance your Windows computer at home or at work with new skins, desktop themes, add handy, compact applets which float freely on your desktop, much like Windows Sidebar gadgets or dashboard widgets such as those for the Mac.

There are other similar systems available, however, they are not all free, and, quite definitely some should be avoided. We will be posting more information about desktop themes and enhancers in more detail shortly.

So without much further ado why not hop over to the RAINMETER WEBSITE and see for yourself. The website is clean and clear with everything neatly explained.

Information & Recomendations  ALWAYS backup your entire system, and / or personal files BEFORE undertaking major changes to your system. We recommend at the very least creating a new RESTORATION POINT before making changes using your default SYSTEM RESTORE, or if budget allows get yourself a copy of ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE HOME or TRUE IMAGE CORPOARATE and save an image of your entire hard drive contents. Acronis creates one single image file that includes your entire operating system as it currently stands with all associated programs, configurations, and personal files. Save that image file to a separate partition, second hard drive, or a large USB, so that if needed, at any time you can restore your system.

"Windows Vista and Windows 7 users will not need this software as they already have transparency included, however, for the Windows XP users, of which there are still many, this small utility works perfectly and does exactly what it says. With a moderate amount of transparency selected your desktop wallpapers really do "fill your screen" without affecting your usability.
